    Description

Vintage Guatemalan Huipil, Hand-Woven & Hand Embroidered with birds and flowers.  Huipil is the Spanish term for a Mayan woman's traditional blouse.  Each style of embroidery identifies where she lives, her religious beliefs, her social and marital status, and her wealth and personality.  This brilliant purple huipil was woven on a backstrap loom in 2 sections, and then they were sewn together with a center seam.  Birds, flowers and a geometric design are elaborately embroidered across the top in a panel measuring 34" X 30".  More flowers are embroidered around the collar, and the neckline has a velvet burgundy trim.  Beautiful, brightly colored quetzales are embroidered across the front of the piece.  There is some overall fraying of threads, which is shows it has been worn.  I still believe it is in good condition.    The sides are open and not sewn together.  The neck opening measures 4 1/2" X 7" and would need to be enlarged to be worn.  It does not go over my head.  I bought this huipil in Antigua, Guatemala, several years ago.  I am not sure of its age. (#230)
The total measurement of the huipil is 52" long X 30" wide.
The front appears to be 2" longer than the back.  There is an inside lining covering up the embroidered area.
    The weight is 2 lbs.
