A first-year student at Gujarat’s Dharpur Medical College, Anil Methaniya, died after being forced to stand for three hours as part of a ragging session by senior students. Methaniya collapsed late Sunday night and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
Following Anil’s death, his family accused senior students of ragging, claiming it led to his death. According to them, all first-year students were attending an introductory session that night and were allegedly made to stand for three hours, after which Anil collapsed. The family is now demanding strict action to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Speaking about the incident, Hardik Shah, the Dean of Dharpur Medical College, confirmed that Anil collapsed and was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
He added that during questioning, students revealed that an introductory session was indeed underway when the incident occurred. The college has informed both Anil’s family and the police. Shah stated that the exact cause of death will only be determined after the post-mortem report.
Siddhpur Deputy SP KK Pandya added that upon receiving information about the student’s death, the police promptly registered a case of accidental death under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code and have begun investigating.
Police have registered a case against 15 students of the medical college, according to news agency PTI.
The accused, all second-year MBBS students, allegedly made some juniors, including the victim, stand in a hostel room for more than three hours on Saturday night and subjected them to “mental and physical torture,” as per the First Information Report (FIR).
They have booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other offences, the FIR said.
The accused students have been suspended from their hostel and academic activities until further orders, said officials from the GMERS Medical College and Hospital at Dharpur in Patan.
